1975 - 1981 Study of Physics at the University of Stuttgart, diploma.

1982 - 1984 PhD in Physics from University of Stuttgart, Max Planck Institute for Metals Research, Institute for Materials Science in Stuttgart. Thesis deals with the kinetics of the storage of hydrogen as a fuel for automobile engines.

1987 - 1991 PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich. Thesis deals with the function and self-regulation capillary-pumped heat transport systems for space applications.
